"US scores poorly on world motherhood rankings: charity"
AFP- Tuesday, May 4

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/afp/20100504/tts-health-women-children-world-c1b2fc3.html

The article is saying that the united states has scored poorly on a campaign group's list of the best countries in which to be a mother, managing only 28th place, and bettered by many smaller and poorer countries. This is because, US has poor maternal mortality rate and scored poorly on under-five mortality. In addition, US is stingy on the maternity leave policy -both in terms of duration and percent of wages paid.

motherhood:the qualities or spirit of a mother

Question: what do you think of this article? What has it got to say about the world today?

I would definitely say that mothers are born with an amazing role and they definitely impact their children's well being enormously. To many, it was thought that in the developed countries, motherhood would have scored higher than developing countries. However, it is not the case. This can be proven by the article above, whereby the author states that the US(a developed country), scores poorly for motherhood and even other other developing countries overtook its(the US) position. This shows that some things need to be done, an improvement to this situation has to be made.

I feel that the US government should look into a reform on the maternity policy, as the government should consider the long term effects on its society. The younger generations are the future leaders of the world, they are the assets to every countries. However, they do need guidance first and motherhood plays a critical role in the children's lives. Mothers are portrayed as a very important figure in the children's lives as they guide them to adulthood. Without guidance, they will not grow up to maturity, and they might even bring troubles to the society. Therefore, the US government should seek for a change in the maternity policy.

In addition, in today's modern world, women no longer seen as lower status than men. They finally do have a say in this society. They are just as career driven as men, and they need not hide themselves in the four walls(home) anymore. Therefore, with such paradigm shift in the society today, women are facing problems as well. Mothers who are working, have to learn how to juggle between work and taking care of the households. This may be one of the reason why motherhood is lowly scored in developed countries such as the US. Hence the governments have to intervene by raising awareness of this problem and to organise workshops and programmes specially for mothers, to learn how to prioritise and so on.
